Trading above the 15-minute opening range high with above-average volume.
The Opening Range High (15m) marks the top of the first-15-minute price range — the initial resistance ceiling. Volume above the 20-period average (on 5-minute bars, approximately the last 100 minutes of baseline activity) confirms that the move has participation behind it. A breakout without volume can be a single buyer pushing price briefly above resistance before it gets sold back; a breakout on elevated volume means multiple market participants are transacting above the prior ceiling, which tends to sustain the move. Unlike the ORB 15m + VWAP Breakout, this screen does not filter for VWAP position — it is possible to have a high-volume ORB breakout while still below VWAP, which makes this signal a touch broader.
Volume on the breakout bar matters most in the first 30-60 minutes of the session when institutional programs are active. A stock clearing the ORB high at 9:50 AM on 2x average volume is a very different signal from the same clear at 12:30 PM on 1.1x volume. The best setups tend to show volume expansion on the break bar followed by sustained above-average volume on the next 2-3 bars — what traders call a "volume expansion continuation." Failure modes: (1) the break bar prints high volume due to a single large order that gets absorbed — check if subsequent bars show normal or declining volume; (2) ORB is unusually wide due to a news event at the open, making the high far from current price; (3) the broader market reverses mid-morning, pulling the stock back below the ORB high despite the initial volume-confirmed break. See Gap Up 1%+ for gaps that begin above the ORB high from the session open.

This screener finds stocks that have broken above the 15-minute Opening Range High on above-average volume, without requiring VWAP confirmation. The elevated volume filter is the key differentiator — it confirms that buyers drove price past the opening range ceiling with real participation, not thin-market drift. Currently 7 stocks match, reflecting the specificity of requiring both structural and volume conditions. Momentum day traders use this as an early-session entry trigger.
