Volume at least 2x the 20-bar average — unusual activity.
The 20-bar average volume on the 1-Hour chart provides the baseline. A 2x surge means current 5-minute volume is double the recent norm. Like Volume Shock 3x, this is a pure volume screen without a price direction filter. The 2x threshold is lower and therefore more frequent: 20 stocks vs. 3 for the 3x version. This means more false signals (routine elevated volume periods, end-of-hour activity, options expiration effects) but also earlier detection of developing events. The trade-off is sensitivity vs. specificity -- 2x catches more real events but also more noise.
Volume Surge 2x is most useful as a screening layer in a multi-step workflow: the screen surfaces candidates, then direction and context determine the trade. A 2x volume surge with a price breakdown through VWAP is a short setup; the same surge with price breaking above the day's high is a long setup. Without direction context, the volume spike is ambiguous. The most common failure mode at the 2x level is routine elevated activity: some stocks routinely trade at 2x average around the open, after index rebalancing, or during options rolls -- time-of-day filtering reduces noise. Compare to Volume Shock 3x for the higher-conviction extreme event. Distribution Breakdown provides the directional-bearish version of this concept.

This screener finds stocks on the 1-Hour timeframe where volume is at least 2x the 20-bar average -- a significant but less extreme version of Volume Shock 3x. Currently 20 stocks match, making this one of the more populated intraday screens. Day traders use this as a real-time alert for unusual activity across the universe, surfacing stocks where something is happening before the full picture is clear. Who uses this: intraday traders who scan for unusual volume as a first filter before adding direction and context filters. Search phrases: 2x average volume stocks screener, volume surge intraday, unusual volume stocks 5 minute. Related: Volume Shock 3x, Distribution Breakdown.
