Trading above the 15-minute opening range high while above VWAP.
The Opening Range High (15m) is the highest price during the first 15 minutes of the NYSE session. A close above it means buyers have successfully absorbed all selling that emerged during price discovery and are extending beyond that ceiling. VWAP is the intraday average price weighted by volume — being above it means the average buyer from the current session is profitable, which tends to sustain momentum. The combination of both conditions is more selective than either alone: many stocks clear the ORB high while still below VWAP (a weaker signal), and many are above VWAP but haven't cleared the ORB high (range-bound). The 15-minute guard prevents signals before the range is formed.
The ORB + VWAP breakout is highest-probability when it occurs in the first 90 minutes of the session, when institutional programs and high-frequency activity sustain directional momentum. After 11:30 AM ET, volume tends to thin and false breakouts increase. The setup also performs better when the broader market (SPY/QQQ) is trending up on the day — confirmation that macro flow supports the individual stock move. Failure modes: (1) breakout into prior day's resistance — a stock clears the ORB high only to stall at the previous session's high or a major supply zone; (2) VWAP drift — price clears ORB high as VWAP is still far below, meaning the intraday average hasn't caught up and the stock is extended; (3) low-float or thin stocks where ORB high is cleared on minimal volume. Compare to ORB 15m + PDH Breakout, which adds the extra filter of clearing the prior day's high — a stronger confirmation. See also Gap Up 1%+ for stocks that opened above both levels from the start.

This screen identifies stocks trading above both the 15-minute Opening Range High and the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) — a dual-confirmation breakout signal. The opening range high is the ceiling established in the first 15 minutes; clearing it while above VWAP means both short-term structure and intraday average price favor buyers. This screener currently matches 48 stocks, making it one of the more populated intraday signals in ChartMath. Day traders and momentum traders use it to find stocks with directional conviction early in the session. Search phrases: ORB breakout VWAP confirmation, opening range high breakout stocks today, intraday momentum screener.
